The American Staffordshire Terrier was accepted in 1936 for registration in the American Kennel Club stud book as Staffordshire Terriers.
The "American" was added in the 1970's in order to distinguish them from their smaller English
counterparts. American Staffordshire Terriers are intelligent and make excellent guardians.
